Abstract

A review of understandings of modernity in the historical light of the centrality of colonialism and migration to its constitution. Considering the largely unacknowledged impact of this history on contemporary, and still racialized,  configurations of society, subjectivity, democracy, and critical work, the essay proposes perspectives drawn from contemporary postcolonial arts as the site for an alternative, more complex mapping.
